Subfloor Prep & Leveling

The install is only as good as the prep. If the subfloor is uneven, soft, or shifting, your new flooring can feel hollow, squeak, separate, or show imperfections. We fix the foundation so the finished floor looks and feels right.

What is subfloor prep & leveling?

Subfloor prep is the work done before the new flooring is installed: fixing soft spots, squeaks, uneven areas, and height changes so the finished floor sits tight, looks clean, and holds up over time.

Problems prep solves

Soft spots that flex or feel unsafe.
Uneven floors that cause bounce or telegraph through click floors.
Squeaks from loose panels or movement in the structure.
Height changes that create awkward transitions between rooms.

What impacts prep scope the most

  • Floor type being installed: click floors need very flat surfaces.
  • Existing damage: water damage or rot increases repair needs.
  • Structure movement: joist bounce or loose fastening can cause squeaks.
  • Transitions: meeting tile, carpet, or steps requires planning.

Prep isn’t “extra” — it’s insurance. A clean foundation makes every flooring product perform better.

What we typically do during subfloor prep

Every house is different, but these are the most common fixes we handle before installing new flooring.

Common prep work

  • Replace damaged or soft subfloor sections
  • Re-fastening to eliminate squeaks and movement
  • Floor patching / feathering low spots
  • Leveling compound where required
  • Addressing dips, humps, and seams

Before we install flooring, we verify

  • Flatness tolerance needed for the chosen product
  • Stable, squeak-free fastening
  • Clean transitions and door clearances
  • Moisture risk areas (basements, exterior doors)
  • Edge details that will meet trim/base properly

Our subfloor prep process

We keep it simple: identify the problem, fix the foundation, then install the flooring on a clean base.

1) Inspect & measure

We check flatness, moisture risk, squeaks, and soft spots so we can plan the right fix.

2) Repair & secure

We replace damaged sections and re-fastening where needed to eliminate movement and noise.

3) Level & smooth

We patch low spots, address seams, and level where required so the floor installs tight.

4) Install-ready finish

We confirm tolerances, transitions, and clearances so the next step (install) goes clean.

Subfloor Prep FAQ

Common questions we get before leveling or repairing a subfloor.

Do I really need subfloor leveling?

If the floor is uneven, click flooring can separate, feel hollow, or show seams. Tile can crack if the base isn’t stable. Prep is what protects the final finish.

Can you fix squeaky floors?

Often, yes. Squeaks are usually caused by movement — loose panels, nails backing out, or subfloor/joist issues. We’ll inspect and recommend the best fix.

Will leveling raise the floor height?

Sometimes slightly, depending on how much correction is needed. We plan transitions and clearances so doors and adjoining rooms still work cleanly.

How long does subfloor prep take?

It depends on how much repair/leveling is needed and the square footage. Some prep is same-day, while larger repairs or cure times can add days. We’ll confirm after inspection.

Want your new floors to feel solid and look clean?
